Fowler's Alabama Battery

1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery G

The Premier American Civil War Artillery Re-Enacting Group.

Carla and crew at Wartrace, Tennessee  in 2003.

Fowler's Alabama Battery is a Civil War Artillery re-enacting unit that, like its historical counterpart, is based primarily in the central Alabama area.  Members of Fowler's have been re-enacting and presenting historical programs for almost as long as the hobby has existed.  The battery participates in re-enactments and living histories all over the Southeast.  Our members are a diverse group from all walks of life who share one common goal - to present Civil War living history in an accurate and realistic manner.  Several of our members are employed in the area of historical education and historical preservation.

Our current armament consists of two Confederate pattern 12-pound Napoleon cannons, "Miss Bertha" and "Miss Carla", which were both poured at Tannehill Ironworks during the 1976 re-firing of the furnace.  The battery also has a 12-pound mountain howitzer, "Fluffy", and an original Coehorn mortar.

Fowler's Battery is a member of the Georgia Division of Re-enactors Association and is committed to strictly following the safety rules of the division.  Colonel Tom Land and Captain Brian Smith command the battery.  The cannons are maintained and supervised by First Sergeant Neal McBrayer and Sergeant Jon Ingram.

When portraying Federal artillery, Fowler's Battery becomes the 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery G, a unit with a very rich history in the western theatre.

Currently, our battery is engaged in the presentation of living history programs for Shiloh National Military Park, Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee, Brierfield Ironworks State Park, and numerous schools.  The fact that the battery has met the rigorous and strict requirements of approval for presentations at National Park Service facilities and historic battlefields speaks of the unit's high standards and their commitment to accuracy and authenticity.  During 2003 alone, the battery has put on demonstrations and historical programs for thousands of spectators at over twenty sites.

Fowler's Battery is based at Brierfield Ironworks State Park in Brierfield, Alabama.
